Self-management is an important life skill that helps students manage themselves effectively. Students with good self-management skills can focus better on their tasks, manage their time, cooperate with others, and improve their performance in studies and everyday life.

Session 1: Introduction to Self-Management

Self-management is the ability to control and regulate our emotions, thoughts, and behaviour according to different situations. It is also known as self-control or self-regulation.

Remember: Self-management means managing yourself effectively instead of allowing your emotions, thoughts, or behaviour to control you.

  • Focus on their tasks.
  • Manage their time effectively.
  • Cooperate and work well with others.
  • Stay disciplined.
  • Improve their academic performance.

Real-Life Example

Manish's Example:

Manish joins a new school with unpolished shoes, untied shoelaces, and a sad face. His lack of personal hygiene and positive attitude affects the way he appears to his classmates. Developing good hygiene and a positive attitude can help him become more confident.

Session 2: Strength and Weakness Analysis

Knowing what you do well and identifying areas where you struggle helps you convert weaknesses into strengths and achieve exceptional performance.

Knowing Yourself

Knowing yourself means understanding your:

  • Beliefs
  • Background
  • Opinions
  • Strengths
  • Weaknesses
  • Areas where you perform well or struggle

Strengths

Strengths are the things we are naturally good at or perform well.

Examples:
  • Understanding other people's emotions.
  • Helping with household chores.
  • Playing cricket well.

Weaknesses

Weaknesses, also called areas of improvement, are things that we struggle with and need to improve.

Examples:
  • Being unable to resist junk food.
  • Wanting to improve computer skills.

Interests vs. Abilities

Interests Abilities
Activities that you enjoy or are curious about. Natural or learned skills that allow you to perform a task well.
What you like to do. What you can do well.
Key Point: Understanding both your interests and abilities helps you understand yourself and make better choices.

Session 3: Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is a sense of trusting your own abilities and yourself.

Qualities of Confident People

1. Self-Belief

A confident person believes that they can learn and improve even when they initially face difficulties.

Example: Niraj had difficulty speaking English, but he believed that he could learn it. He joined a class to improve his English and become fluent.

2. Commitment

Commitment means remaining dedicated to a goal and continuing to work towards it.

Example: Mahatma Gandhi was highly committed to the cause of Indian independence. He used non-violent civil disobedience to work towards his goal.

Factors That Lower Confidence

  • Continuously thinking about past mistakes.
  • Giving up after the first failed attempt.
  • Being surrounded by people with negative attitudes.
Remember: Failure or mistakes should be treated as opportunities to learn and improve rather than reasons to give up.

Session 4: Positive Thinking

A positive attitude helps an individual succeed and overcome challenges in life. Positive thinkers focus on finding ways to move forward instead of concentrating only on problems.

Example: Ants are small but continue working hard. Similarly, positive thinkers focus on effort and possible solutions even when they face difficulties.

The SMILE Model for Positive Thinking

Letter Meaning What It Means
S Start Start your day positively through activities such as exercise or reading something motivating.
M Manage Manage time for relaxation through activities such as yoga, meditation, or listening to music.
I Imagine Imagine the best in a situation and focus on how things can be improved.
L Learn Learn to accept feedback positively and use it objectively for improvement.
E Express Express gratitude and be thankful for good things and people.

Negative Thinking vs. Positive Thinking

Situation Negative Thinking Positive Thinking
Not getting enough marks for the Science stream "My life is ruined." "I didn't get the marks for Science, but I can now explore other interesting streams."
Key Idea: Positive thinking does not mean ignoring difficulties. It means looking for constructive ways to handle them.

Session 5: Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is the habit of keeping yourself clean to stay healthy and maintain a good social image.

Three Steps to Personal Hygiene

Step Good Hygiene Practices
CARE Keep hair free of dandruff, brush teeth daily, and cut nails weekly.
WASH Wash hands frequently, take a daily bath, and wash clothes regularly.
AVOID Blow your nose into a handkerchief rather than your sleeve and keep your feet dry by changing socks daily.

Important Hygiene Habit

Personal hygiene should be maintained in all seasons. Even in cold climates, one should take a bath regularly to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.

Session 6: Grooming

Grooming is the process of making yourself look neat, tidy, and smart.

Importance of Grooming

  • Helps you look smart.
  • Helps you feel confident.
  • Creates a good first impression.
  • Shows that you are neat and presentable.

Area Grooming Practice
Clothes Wear neat, properly ironed clothes that fit well.
